I have studied gemstones and jewellery making over the last 20 years. My interest began as a teenager in Waterstones. I was browsing books and came across a book on minerals. I decided to buy it and learn more…
…From there I got Walter Schumann’s book on Gemstones of the World. It opened my eyes to the sheer amount of gems available. I purchased a faceting machine and started learning how to buy rough and cut it.
I cut a few stones and then my interest trailed off as I studied music at, what was then, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. My passion was reignited about 9 years ago when I came into some money. I decided then to go to Africa and buy some gems to start a business. I hired a gemmologist to work with me as my knowledge was still in its infancy at that point. I had read some more books, but that trip was an eye opener in terms of the commercial gem business.
After spending around £15,000 on gems, and a further £10,000 on expenses I came back to the UK and tried to sell them. I did not succeed. In fact over the last few years I have struggled to make a profit due to mental health issues and lack of confidence.
I did however, in that time, build up knowledge on gems. I wouldn’t call myself an expert by any means, but I know far more than your average Joe. I have bought and sold gems online via auctions and some private sales. It is not an easy thing to sell luxury goods, especially when the stones I have tend to be less recognised by the public.
One lesson I have learned recently is that it is not talent, skills or money that make a success. It is sheer endurance through good and bad. Hence this site is up and staying up.
I believe in honesty and integrity above all else. I provide an honest service and product and always will. If I can give someone joy with a piece of jewellery I make, or give them a sparkling gem to brighten their day, that will be enough for me.
I don’t pretend to be perfect, and I will make mistakes, but I will always give my best in all I do. I hope that is good enough for you as a potential customer.
